The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
